For all their simplicity, grains are one of the most
difficult foods to cook properly. Luckily, we have local author Maria Speck and
Ancient Grains for Modern Meals, her creative, delicious, and thorough look at hearty
Old World staples like farro, barley, polenta, and wheat berries. In this
cooking demonstration, Maria will show how to coax the best flavors and
textures from a variety grains, and she’ll discuss the food traditions of the
Mediterranean and northern European cuisines that inspired her cookbook.

confections and bonbons on our shelves. Somerville-based chocolate artisans Elaine
Hsieh and Catharine Sweeney have an uncompromising dedication to technique and
flavor. In this class, we’ll start from the beginning, tasting the different
chocolates they use, then watch and learn as Elaine and Catharine share their
process for making bonbons. We’ll round out the afternoon by sampling several
of EHChocolatier’s signature confections and bonbons while sipping on coffee,
